What are muntins ?
Muntins are decorative elements that are used in windows or doors to divide their surface into smaller fields. These are usually thin bars or shallow slats made of wood, PVC, aluminum or other materials that are placed on or between the panes.
Traditionally, muntins were used in single-glazed windows to increase their thermal and acoustic insulation. By dividing the window surface into smaller fragments, the chance of cracking or shattering glass was also reduced. Today, muntins are used more for aesthetic purposes, especially in windows imitating a classic style, such as country, colonial or Provence windows.
Depending on the style of the window and the user's preferences, muntins can be placed in various configurations, e.g. in a cross, horizontal, vertical or lattice shape. There are also mull-free windows, which instead of traditional muntins have thin slats or special foils built between the panes, creating the illusion of division into smaller fields.
